This question is mostly for those who have been in the business for several years and are well established, but I'm grateful for any input.

What form of marketing has been most effective and how has the balance shifted over time? Is passive marketing (such as putting up a website) all a man really needs, or is there some value in getting out there and meeting new people in person? What has your experience been?

You need to invest in your presence online. Get to be known, have good SEO for your website, write blogs... basically do things that will get you visible other than saying "I'm a companion available to you ladies", like ads. That usually is not a good investment of time or money. Invest yourself in online communities close to your hobbies, and just passively let it be known that you're a companion. No aggressive sales, by all mean, that'll get you nowhere.

Max definitely has it right.  Diversification is the key. While one source has led directly to almost all of my business and clients, I am making sure that I have a number of marketing options available so that potential clients can cross-reference.  Anyone with five bucks and a couple of decent images can place an ad on Backpage, but you need to be invested in what you do and appear to be invested.

A good website is important; attention to details critical; it is the first impression most potential patrons get of you. SEO can get you pretty high in the google rankings; my rankings for "upscale straight male companion" started on page 5 or 6 of google and now get me to page 1. But ....... that only goes so far as getting noticed, the web pages have to do much of the rest.

I tried eros in a couple of cities; the upside there are very few such ads. However, I didn't get enough interest from there to justify it. This was a couple of years ago and I'm thinking of trying again in a few select cities come September.

In my case, what you refer to as "active marketing" such as going out and trying to "fish" potential clients is irrelevant because it's not common here in Israel. It might work in places such as Vegas.

You need to maintain a good "passive" presence - website mainly and perhaps some ads here and there, and a good "active" presence such as blogging, forums, twitter (my account was hacked a few days ago :'(), and of course - use each of your clients as a potential lead to new clients (depending on how open she is about having met you and how willing she is to share her experience with her girlfriends) - which I found to be the most effective marketing channel.
